Case study:

When we undertook an indepedent business review at one of our clients, we discovered that, the company was paying Ushs. 5 million annually in insurance premiums, of which Ushs. 3 million was because of the overstated value of computers. The computer assets insured were both hardware (cpu, monitor, keyboard, etc) and software (data and application systems), valued at cost. The total cost of the software (application and data in the computers) was used in the computation of the annual insurance premium payable.

After reviewing everything, we advised our client that whereas insurance of computer hardware is commendable, it is not advisable to insure data. Although insurance may provide compesation enough to replace the lost computer hardware, it cannot help the company recover it's lost data. Accordingly, the best way to manage risks of loss of data is continous back up of data. We were able to set up a simple back up facility for the client, in addition to training staff to ensure continous backup of the data. As a result of our intervention, we were able to save our client over Ushs. 3 million annually in terms of unneccessary insurance premiums.
