1.“If you don’t go after what you want, you’ll never have it.”
Moses led people to the promised land. He got to know about it, wanted it and went for it. While young, we would walk the over 40kms from Munteme to Kyehoro, one of the landing sites on Lake Albert, now a beehive of oil drilling activities. Once in a while, we would here the roar of a lion. We had been told that lions never wait for its prey to come to it. With keen eyes and powerful legs, it chases after what it desires. We would stay put to avoid its detection of our presence in the rift valley as we crossed to the lake.
Likewise, in life, you must be proactive in pursuing your dreams. Whether it’s a career ambition, personal goal, or a new venture, waiting for opportunities to come to you is futile. Be like a lion. Don’t get ready, stay ready prepared to hunt down your goals with determination and perseverance.
2.“If you don’t ask, the answer is always no.”
“Ask and you will get. Knock, and the door shall be opened for you”, the Bible is full of wisdom for your everyday life.
As Mr Strategy, I must move out to clients to ask for jobs. Sometimes I go the extra mile of engaging with prospects so that they appreciate they need help as some of may not know that things are not moving as they should. That is what knocking is all about.
A lioness leads her pride with assertiveness, ensuring the survival and prosperity of her family. She doesn’t shy away from taking what’s needed. In your life, asking for what you need is crucial. Whether it’s seeking help, requesting a raise, or asking for advice, you must voice your needs else you will be ignored. That is how capitalism works. You must have a mindset that the worst outcome is a no, but the potential gains from a yes are invaluable.
All change makers speak up for their causes. They don’t just sit, they act. Knock on that door. Send the email. Make the call. Make an appointment and visit. Do Reachout.
3. If you don’t step forward, you’re always in the same place.
I decided early on that if I attend a conference or a meeting, I must grab any an opportunity to make my voice heard. That means preparing in advance. Research about the event, the speakers and identify areas that might be overlooked but are critical. When you have an open floor, raise your hand and speak up. Step forward and be counted. Imagine a lion cub taking its first steps. Each tentative move forward is a step towards becoming the king of the jungle. In your own lives, stepping out of your comfort zone is essential for growth. Stagnation leads to missed opportunities and unfulfilled potential. Like the lion cub, embrace the unknown and take bold steps towards our goals. Progress often requires courage and the willingness to face challenges head-on.
4. If you don’t adapt, you’ll be left behind.
Things are changing. When I started out at Nile Bank, I thought being an auditor was it. They my interests moved to IT security. I did all I could and soon got bored. I transitioned to fraud risk management and digital forensics. It was the best. Connecting the dots to catch the bad guys was the thing. Soon, I had a gum help at my head, in traffic jam, and saw all my dream flying out instantly. I decided to comply but I had to move to something that helps people bring money on the table—strategy. Today I am Mr Strategy and I love it. Working with leaders to evaluate the business from all angles -IT to operations, customer journey to delivery channels, infrastructure to supply chains, people to employee value addition is a wonder. It’s my true north and I love it. It taps into all my prior skills and experiences.
A lion’s survival depends on its ability to adapt to changing environments and circumstances. Whether it’s a drought, a new rival pride, or changes in prey patterns, adaptation is key to thriving in the wild. In your world, adaptability is crucial. Embracing change, learning new skills, and staying flexible can make the difference between success and failure. By continuously evolving, you ensure that you remain relevant and resilient in the face of adversity.
