Are you playing to win or playing to play?

“If you are given 10 hours to cut down a tree, take seven hours sharpening the axe”

Emphases the importance of strategic planning. The test of any effective strategy depends on the ease in its implementation.

Is your strategy a research paper with over 30 pages of macro-economic theory and uncoordinated analysis OR a one page brief that guides your team’s daily decisions and actions? Does your strategy provide clear areas of focus i.e. playing to win (Blue Ocean) instead of playing to play (Red Ocean)? “When companies don’t win in the marketplace, it is often because they don’t have a strategy. Strategy is about (winning) and winning is about making (clear choices) about where and how to play.”

Winning the Game

Winning The GameTM is a new approach to strategic planning that combines Harvard Business School’s award winning strategic planning model Playing To Win with the Blue Ocean Strategy: How to Create Uncontested market Space and Make the Competition Irrelevant, by W. Kim Chan. The Winning the Game also incorporates great works by Prof. Michael Porter on strategy to deliver a strategy that is easy to execute so that you move closer to your organization’s vision.

All organizations have strategic plans. But not all strategic plans are easy to implement. Strategy monitoring is not easy because the strategy (how to win) is often confused with a plan (step by step action plan) to achieve the vision. That is the difference of using Winning The Game approach. You get a one page strategy and an implementation plan (5-15 pages – depending on organisation size), with clear objectives, activities, KPIs, and by who clearly linked to your strategy and overall targets. As a CEO, this makes your leadership role easier as your team can easily be held accountable.

We know your time is limited, just like ours. We want to give you deep insights to achieve tremendous success. As a CEO/manager, do you think your team can succeed by inhaling own exhaust? That is what a poor strategy does – lots of time spent trying to achieve targets that are out of context or poorly formulated. Learn how to align your structure and team effort to execute your strategy.
