What is your career strategy?

Before you draw a career plan. First, have a career strategy. In our village, we had a recluse. He lived very deep in the village. The man was hardworking and very skilled. He had a big banana plantation that would supply food to the entire village.

I remember being sent by Mom to the man’s farm to buy matooke. It was a 2-hour journey on a bicycle. The place was very far.  This man was odd. He had a great house. Fantastic farm. He seemed to know the soil types and the kinds of crops that were ideal for the soil. Several years later, we got to learn that the man was a three-degree holder. He was a PhD holder! And chose to retire in the village away from the noise and chaos of city life, as he used to call it. He had been disappointed by politicians for their disrespect of academic achievers that he chose a life of a recluse.

That was way back in the late 1980s.  I was a young boy, with a lot of dreams and ambitions for the future. Unfortunately, the man’s home burnt down, destroying all his life’s works and records, something that affected his sanity.

Granted, anyone can be brilliant after the fact. However, looking back, would you say this man had a career strategy? But first, answer the following:

1) Which sector or industry do you want to play, win, or dominate? Why?

2) What skills, qualifications, experience, and networks do you need to play, win or dominate the chosen sector?

3) At which level do you want to play? Local, regional, or global? Why?

4) Which schools and Universities must you attend to become a subject matter expert?

5) How will you measure success? Why?

Once you have answers to the above questions, you can then start crafting your career strategy. The next step is a personal reality check to assess the resources you require and focus to get there. #universities #success #experience #mindspark.

To be continued.
