You see some board members move with heads down for a reason. Imagine this: A board meeting where the CEO is known for his over-the-top reactions. Some time in November 2022, during the after effects of the pandemic, the company experienced some small financial hiccup, nothing very serious, just a small inconvience due to cashflow mismatch. But to the CEO? It was the end of the world. You know people who make mountains out of anthills.
The CFO is called in, sheepishly explains, “We’re slightly off our quarterly target by 0.05%.”
Suddenly, without waiting for more context from the CFO, the CEO gasps dramatically, slams his fist on the table, and says, “THIS COMPANY IS DOOMED! WE NEED A RESCUE PLAN!”
The board members sit there, trying not to laugh because, honestly, the company is doing great, and they all know it. One director, the old wise guy of the group, leans back and says, “Doomed, you say? Well, I guess we’ll just have to close the office and head to the beach then as we look for another CEO who can get us of of this mess!”
The board cracks up, except the CEO, who’s pacing the room like it’s the end of days. After five minutes of hyperventilating, the CEO calms down and says, “Alright, maybe we’ll just cut the budget by 0.05%. And I am the best person for the job.”
Problem solved. Drama queen meltdown avoided.
