As we kick off the new year 2025, let’s talk about purpose-led leadership. Too often, corporate vision statements are impressive but disconnected from reality on the ground. A fancy plaque on the wall doesn’t inspire anyone effective communication and alignment do.

As Mr Strategy, here’s what I have learned. “If your team can not see how your business purpose ties to their aspirations, they will disengage. And disengaged staff do not build legacies. They clock in, clock out, and watch as opportunities crumble.” This is a recipe for disaster as staff come only to collect cheques at the end of the month as they are busy searching for the next opportunity. But you can change this kind of toxic culture by adopting purpose-led leadership.

Three essentials of purpose-ped leadership

  1. Forget jargon and buzzwords. Speak plainly about what your organization stands for. If your staff can not recite the organization’s vision and mission without stumbling, you are doing it wrong. Communicate effectively. What is your business purpose? Craft consistent communication that shows how it aligns with the career ambitions of your team in terms of growth and community impact.
  2. Ask your team: What do you want to achieve this year? When personal dreams align with the company’s purpose, magic happens. A staff member saving for a boda boda sees the SACCO as more than a job. It’s their enabler. Great leaders align personal and organizational goals. What is in it for your team? Why should they come so early even when it is raining? If you can inspire that self-drive, you are a great leader. Craft your message with clarity that links personal success to business outcomes. No one bothers whether you make USD 1m profits. They mind whether they will get a promotion or bonus next year so they can take their children to good schools.
  3. When leadership inspires people internally, the ripple effect benefits the community. A thriving organisation empowers families, creates opportunities, and transforms societies. How does your organization impact the wider community?

Mr. Strategy’s Takeaway: Start the year by recalibrating. Stop dictating and start connecting. Leadership is not about you but rather about the people you serve.
