Bright Future SACCO began with big promises: affordable loans, secure savings, and a brighter tomorrow. George “Boss Man” Katojojo, the chairman, was charismatic and confident exactly what members thought they needed. But behind the charm was a man with no plan.

The SACCO’s board meetings were a circus.

        1. Loans without collateral

George pushed loans to his friends and family, all without security. His nephew walked away with UGX 20 million and never paid a shilling back.

      2. Land scam

The SACCO bought land at double the market price from George’s “trusted contact.” Later, members found the land wasn’t registered, and the money had disappeared.

       3. Fake AGMs

George filled meetings with his supporters, who clapped at his lies about profits while silencing genuine questions.

The SACCO office was in chaos.

Members queued for hours, only to be told their savings were “delayed.” Staff hid behind excuses while misappropriating funds. One boda boda rider shouted, “Where’s my money? I’ve saved for two years!” George smiled, gave empty promises, and laughed behind closed doors.

An audit revealed the truth: UGX 100 million missing, loans undocumented, and the SACCO broke. George and his cronies vanished, leaving devastated members behind.

Insight

Don’t wait for disaster. If your SACCO shows signs of mismanagement ie lack of transparency, cliques in leadership, or questionable financial practices, demand change. Governance isn’t optional; it’s survival.
