Cybercrime is knocking, are you ready: Series 2.

Less than a year after assuming his new CEO role came the wakeup call.

On a bright Tuesday morning, the CFO hurriedly entered his office and mumbled something about the day’s newspaper headline and the customer’s data. The alarm bells went off. Something had gone amiss. They walked to the server rooms and murmured a little longer.

The next morning, a team of three arrived. The CFO introduced them as cybersecurity consultants.

For two weeks, they worked from one room allocated to them. Once in awhile they lurked around the company premises and spoke to staff working upon what was later to be called a computer forensics investigation.

On their last Thursday afternoon, they had to wrap things up. But before they could leave, they had to explain what they had been up to and what they had discovered. A meeting was set up for the next day.

At 7:00 am on Friday morning, I bet you can guess the first two gentlemen in the boardroom! That’s right, Matia and his CFO.

Matia wanted to understand how his institution had been hacked and wanted to be enlightenment.

The team leader stated what was fairly well known, by then, that the institution had been hacked.

He asserted that hackers, like any other criminals, plan their scheme. They set it up, execute it, keep it going and reap benefits from it.

Yours truly was lucky to sit in the boardroom that Friday morning. I was the team leader of the cybersecurity consultants that had spent two weeks in the tunnels to unravel the mystery.

Starting with series 3, I will be giving you a narrative of what the team leader explained how hackers break into computer systems.
