I remember standing in a dusty yard behind a manufacturing plant just after sunrise. Inside the boardroom, the strategy was world-class. Outside, the machines were idle. That is where strategy goes to die, between the boardroom and the shop floor.
Let me be direct with you as Mr. Strategy. I have learned this the hard way across banks, universities, regulators, and family businesses. Strategy is not what you approve. Strategy is what survives contact with Monday morning.
Consider this: a pilot can file the most elegant flight plan. If the fuel gauge is ignored and the weather is dismissed, the plane will still crash. Strategy without execution discipline is aviation by hope.
I was invited to refresh a bank’s strategy twelve months after board approval. On paper, everything was perfect. Vision. Mission. Strategic pillars. On the ground, branch managers were improvising. Targets conflicted. Risk was treated as a compliance paragraph. Staff knew exactly which initiatives would quietly die, and which would be ignored politely.
I always tell leaders that: “Your real strategy is what your people do when your PowerPoint is closed.”
I do not start with frameworks. I started as a medical doctor. I diagnose. I sit with frontline teams. I trace decisions end-to-end. I follow approvals, budgets, incentives, and fear. In that bank, the disease was not ambitious. It was avoidance. Everything was a priority, so nothing was owned.
The leadership challenge is execution drift. Clever people, busy calendars, no outcomes.
I recommend a simple remedy. I force choices. Few battles. Clear owners. Visible risks. Short execution cycles. Weekly reviews that feel more like checking vital signs than defending slides. When an initiative has no owner, it is already dead.
If you want a practical tool, try this for thirty days. Walk the business weekly. Ask three questions.
a) What are you working on this week?
b) Why does it matter now?
c) Who gets in trouble if it fails?
The answers will reveal your true strategy. Execution is not the last step. Execution is the strategy.
